Summary
This course provides the knowledge and skills required for anyone that needs authorisation to access a high voltage enclosures for the purposes of high voltage switching.
***Electrical Apprentices in the first 6 months of their apprenticeship ARE NOT permitted to attend this course.***
Please note:
- Contractor Workers who want to apply to Ergon Energy or Energex for substation system access key can complete this course.
- On completion of this course, participants (including Electrical Apprentices that have already completed the first 6 months of their apprenticeship) can be assigned the 'Safe Entry to High Voltage Enclosures' authorisation.
- This course can now be used as part of your application to become an Authorised Person. This course is not equivalent to and does not replace the '1656 (T0911) Introduction to Electrical Network Infrastructure for Authorised Persons' training course.
- Important: Until further notice, we will only be issuing S1/S3/System Access Keys to personnel that work for companies that have a current contract with us or are an approved Accredited Service Provider. Any application for S1/S3/System Access Keys by non-contracted personnel will be declined. Please contact your Contractor Specialist or Contract Tender for further information about how to obtain a S1/S3/System Access Key.
- The following courses have been superseded by, but are not equivalent to, T0838:
- 4431 Safe Entry to HV Enclosures
- M204 Substation Safety Awareness (SSAW)
- T0912 Safe Access to Substation Enclosures (System Key Access).
Training refresher: Every 3 years by completing course 4027.

Skills Acquired
On successful completion of this module including all prerequisites and assessments you should have these skills:
- Apply electrical safety and technical knowledge relevant to the type of work and the operation of plant or vehicles near overhead and underground electric lines.
- Interpret the application and intent of the Electrical Safety Code of Practice – Working Near Overhead and Underground Electric Lines.
- Describe the difference between Authorised Persons and Untrained Persons as outlined in the Electrical Safety Code of Practice - Working Near Overhead and Underground Electric Lines.
- Explain basic electrical concepts and the effect of electricity on the human body.
- Identify hazards that may be present and the control measures to be implemented to manage the risks associated with work carried out on or near overhead and underground electric lines, and within high voltage enclosures.
- Identify electricity network infrastructure assets, substation components and voltages.
- Identify exclusion zones applicable to people, vehicles and operating plant for various electric line voltages, types of conductors and cables, high voltage enclosures, environmental conditions, and training and authorisations of people on the electricity network.
- State the emergency planning, response and reporting procedures required in the event of an electrical incident or accident.
- Demonstrate the process for detecting abnormal electrical interference in a high voltage enclosure using a tuned AM radio.
- Demonstrate the process for safe entry to and exit from a high voltage enclosure.
